Marvel’s New Series “Zodiac”: What the Twelve Signs Really Are

Halfway through the Comic Con livestream, the host announced the title of a new show, and before the plot could cause a stir, the comments had already blown up with “I’m a Scorpio—am I the villain?” On October 7, Marvel Television announced the live-action series “Zodiac” at New York Comic Con, expected in 2028; in the comics, Zodiac is a criminal syndicate that takes the twelve signs of the zodiac as its codenames. At this year’s con, Marvel’s slate also included new animation and a comics app; “Zodiac” is the live-action series in this batch of new projects.

How the twelve signs came about

The zodiac is the path the sun travels across the sky over the course of a year. The ancient Babylonians divided it into twelve equal segments of thirty degrees each, naming them after nearby constellations—this is the “twelve signs of the zodiac.” Mind the wording: it is a “sign,” not a “constellation.” A sign is an equal division that people drew; the actual sizes and boundaries of the constellations do not line up with it exactly.

A fact that is often overlooked

In astronomy, the sun’s path actually passes through thirteen constellations; the extra one is Ophiuchus. Astrology keeps using the twelve-sign system not because it miscalculated, but because its role is to be a “coordinate grid divided into twelve,” not a precise astronomical measurement. These are two complete systems, each in its own right.

So what can it tell you

What the twelve signs can tell you is “which segment the sun was in when you were born”—that is all, and it does not hand you a script. To look at something in finer detail, the site’s Western Astrology Chart asks for your birth time and the latitude and longitude of your birthplace, casts a natal chart, and only then discusses transits.
